A football-mad father has 13 sons all named after famous players – but he and his wife are still desperately trying for a daughter.
Irineu Cruz, 40, and his wife Jucicleide Silva, from Brazil, have been trying for a girl for nearly two decades and now have enough sons to make up their own football team.
The boys are aged between one month old and 18 years old, and the couple say they will not stop trying for a girl.
When Jucicleide got pregnant the first time, the couple decided that she would name the girls, while Irineu would name the boys.
Irineu has named all 13 sons after famous South American footballers, all beginning with the letter R.
The family, who live in Conceiçao de Coité, hoped their thirteenth child would be a girl, but instead the midwife told them it was yet another boy.
The family’s newest addition has been christened Ronaldo after the former Brazil star.
Little Ronaldo joins brothers Robson, 18, Reinan, 17, Rauan, 15, Rubens,14, Rivaldo,13, Ruan, 12, Ramon, 10, Rincon, nine, Riquelme, seven, Ramires, five, Railson, three, and Rafael, two.
According to population experts, the odds of having 13 boys in a row is one in 8,000 making them a record-breaking family.
Irineu dreams of having at least one of his children living up to their name and becoming a footballer.
The farmer said:
We don’t have any medals. When we win, we get a goat or a box of drink and some food for the children.
would be amazing if one of our boys ended up playing for Brazil.
They are all good footballers particularly Robson and Rauan who are our star strikers.
The exception is Reinan who prefers chasing girls.
Jucicleide Silva said:
Every lunch time I cook a kilo of rice, a kilo of beans and an extra-large packet of macaroni.
Of course there are times when things are tough but nobody ever goes hungry.
If we have one loaf of bread, it’s divided and shared between everybody.
The good thing is that all my boys are well behaved.
With her large brood of boys, Jucicleide still dreams of naming a little girl one day.
She added: “It would be wonderful to be able to choose her name and to finally hold up the red card to my husband.”
