Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio make better friends than lovers.
The actors, who co-starred in 1997’s Titanic and 2008’s Revolutionary Road, have always been close. In fact, DiCaprio gave the actress away when she married Ned Rocknroll in 2012.
Kate Winslet has spoken about why her and Leonardo DiCaprio never got together, and if you listen closely, you can hear everyone making the same joke.
Winslet says in Marie Claire U.K.‘s November issue:
I think the reason that friendship works is because there was never any romantic thing.
It’s so disappointing for people to hear that, because in the soap opera of the Kate and Leo story we fell in love at first sight and had a million snogs, but actually we never did. He always saw me as one of the boys; I’ve never really been a girly-girl.
We needed each other to lean on because we were very young and working all kinds of crazy bloody hours and it was a shock to the system.
Winslet and DiCaprio had an unrivaled chemistry on screen back in 1997, so much so that people really wanted their on-screen romance to become a real romance.
Whether that says more about their acting or our dismal expectations remains to be seen, but if they were to drink loads of Guinness in an Irish bar and get it on in a car in real life, it’d be “omg totez emosh” for a lot of people.
Sad then, that Winslet never actually fancied the Lothario, who seems to have a model girlfriend for each day of the week.
she said on ITV’s Lorraine:
We were both very young and luckily, and this was the fortunate thing, we never fancied each other.
I know that’s really annoying to hear, sorry. We really never did. So it did mean that we were able to tease each other, which we still do, which is really amazing.
It must be a shock to the system for DiCaprio, who must be used to everyone fancying him, but given that they’re good mates, he’s probably not too scarred.
It’s been 20 years since the film was released, much to the disbelief of Winslet.
The lovely thing about Titanic for me now, my children and their friends say, ‘Oh, I love the bit in Titanic when you did…’ they are reciting lines from Titanic that I’ve long forgotten.
There’s another generation of children who are enjoying it and loving it for the first time. It’sIt’s Like Mary Poppins I like to think.
Earlier in the week, appearing on Good Morning America ahead of the release of her new film The Mountain Between Us, Kate was asked if it was true that she and Leo still quoted lines from Titanic to each other. She nodded in reply and said: “You know. I know you love us even more now!“
Opening up about their relationship, she added:
I do feel so grateful for that friendship. And honestly it is like family. It’s one of those rare, Hollywood friendships that I just feel very, very blessed to have.
I sort of wish there was like a soap opera version of the story where actually Jack and Rose really do end up together. But no.
